The Lions Club of Cronulla

Sep 27 |19:57

The Lions Club of Cronulla was chartered in 1965, and over the years we have established a reputation as a leader in fundraising for charitable causes, not only in the Sutherland Shire, but also in the wider community.

Our contributions to the welfare of the local community have been many and varied, ranging from the partial painting of a small cottage for a single abandoned mother to the purchase of medical facilities for our local hospital and large scale donations to the Children's Hospital at Randwick.

Lions is headquartered in Chicago, USA and from there many outstanding International Service projects are directed, and millions of dollars distributed. Health activities; agricultural schemes; educational improvements; medical research; aid to the homeless, aged and infirm ? the list is endless.

In Australia, we have a national Council of Governors from 20 Lion Districts who coordinate national projects:  Drug Awareness; Hearing Dogs; Medical Research;

The Australian Lions Foundation provides funds for prompt relief of national disasters, local bushfire victims had financial help within days of their loss.

Lions has given financial and practical assistance to many, including:- Victims of the Maitland floods in the 50's an entire suburb was rebuilt on higher ground. Lions Christmas Cakes

The first contact many people have with Lions is through buying Lions Christmas Cakes.The Lions Christmas Cake programme started as a project to support Lions “SAVE SIGHT” activities.  The first “LIONS SAVE SIGHT CHRISTMAS CAKES”, introduced in 1966, were baked by Big Sister, part of the Reckitts and Coleman group of companies, and were three pound cakes.  The project immediately proved successful, and sales throughout Australian Lions Clubs have been constant over the past two decades, after reaching astronomical levels on the inception of the programme.

In 1975 the cake became “metric” and converted to 1.5kg and reduced in packaging from twelve to ten per carton. In 1986 Lions management adopted a recommendation that the cake be  manufactured to a lower, larger profile which has been popular. Cakes have been baked by Australia’s leading food companies including Big Sister, Gartrell White, Arnotts, Sarah Lee, and since 1983 by the present manufacturer , “Top Taste” (the baking division of George Weston Foods).

1998 saw the introduction nationally of the 1kg Lions Christmas Cake to the progarmme. All cakes are baked to an identical recipe, ensuring a uniform, high quality product.

Cronulla Lions have been selling the Lions Christmas Cake since the early 1980’s and sales have been consistent throughout the years. In 2008 we achieved record sales.  Annual sales nationally are approximately $5.5 million and it is estimated that since the inception of the progarmme, Australian Lions Clubs have raised in excess of $45 million.  This is an outstanding result and reflects the enthusiasm of all Clubs participating in the programme, and is a testament to a unique, high quality product and respected brand, “The Lions Christmas Cake”.

Lions Christmas Cakes can be ordered directly through Cronulla Lions Club.
